Mandate

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs is mandated to provide strategic leadership, policy direction, and regulatory oversight on all matters relating to gender equality and the protection, development, and welfare of children under the age of eighteen (18) in Sierra Leone.

The Ministry is responsible for ensuring that gender and child protection considerations are fully integrated into national development frameworks, and for promoting the rights, participation, and empowerment of women and children in all sectors of society

The National Machinery for the development, coordination and oversight of all interventions relating to the promotion of gender equality, women’s empowerment, child protection, development and wellbeing

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs envisions strengthened capacity to facilitate the development of gender- and child-responsive laws and policies, coordinate implementation, and provide effective oversight of interventions promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, child rights, wellbeing, and protection from violence, abuse, and exploitation

Our Mandate

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs is particularly tasked with the following:
1. Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of the policy and legal framework for issues relating to women and children below 18 years of age;

Functions

In fulfilling its mandate, the Ministry shall undertake the following functions:

  • Policy Development and Oversight:
    Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of policies and legal frameworks relating to gender and children’s issues.
    Ensure that national development policies and frameworks are gender-responsive and child-sensitive.
  • Advocacy and Protection:
    Promote and facilitate the full participation of women in national development processes.
    Address and coordinate national responses to issues of violence against women and children.
  • Coordination and Collaboration:
    Collaborate with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) on gender and children’s issues.
    Liaise with development partners, civil society organizations, and non-governmental organizations supporting women and children.
  • Resource Mobilization:
    Mobilize financial and technical resources to support gender and children-related programmes and projects.
  • Institutional Oversight:
    Supervise and provide policy guidance to the National Commission for Children.
